A concerted effort to rid the city streets and parapets of derelict vehicles and unsightly placed materials, began on Wednesday when workers of the Georgetown Municipality descended on John Street, Werk-en-Rust, removing two forklifts and a trailer in the vicinity of the Georgetown Prisons. The two forklifts are said to be owned by a businessman who lives in the same street, while the trailer is believed to be the property of the Guyana Prison Service, according to Deputy City Engineer, Lloyd Alleyne. The items were placed on a tractor trailer and transported to the municipal Stone Depot at Princes Street.“We have to clear this area by the prisons…ersons have been written to move these things but they are not complying so we are moving them ourselves.”According to Alleyne, the municipality will not allow the callous practice to continue unabated in the city. And in order for the seized items to be retrieved by their respective owners, the City official revealed that a fee will have to be paid to the municipality. The fee, he said, could amount to the equivalent of the cost incurred to remove the items from the parapet or could be based on the discretion of the City Engineer. On Wednesday, several derelict items including vehicles were seen in sections of the Stone Depot Compound. And this had developed since some owners are yet to retrieve their properties.Meanwhile, the municipality has also been targeting scrap iron dealers who have been utilising council’s parapet to store their merchandise and in so doing,Chicago Cubs Jerseys, have hindered the city’s drainage system from operating optimally.“There are many around the city that we are looking at. Some of them we have spoken to on numerous occasions and they are making no effort to remove the scrap iron from Council’s reserve,” Alleyne noted. And even as the municipality seeks to clean up the city, it has been receiving support from the Prison Services. Alleyne disclosed that several prisoners have been engaged in cleaning the alleyways and drains in Lacytown. The whole move by the municipality comes as part of efforts to prepare the city for the anticipated rainy season and the upcoming Twenty/20 Cricket World Cup.Prior to the celebration of Mashramani, Deputy Public Relations Officer,Jerseys NFL Wholesale, Debra Lewis had related that the Council was working in collaboration with the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development to enhance the city. This venture, she pointed out,NFL Jerseys Sale, was slated to cost an estimated $22M.Among the enhancement works that were slated to be undertaken were the cleaning and de-silting of all main drains and canals,Jerseys NFL Wholesale China Online, the removal of encumbrances on council’s parapet and the removal of derelict vehicles. As part of the campaign, a number of derelict buildings have been identified for demolition. Among the target areas are Kingston,Carlos Santana Indians Jersey, Wortmanville, Lodge, South Cummingsburg, Charlestown and Bourda.According to the Deputy PRO, notices have already been sent to the owners of these buildings to demolish structures that are evidently dangerous to members of the public. “These buildings have been of concern to us because they are a threat to public health and safety. It causes the city to look unsightly and in some instances provides a haven for criminal elements…They could pounce on unsuspecting citizens.”The issue of derelict buildings has for some time been a major worry to the City Council. It has been deduced that the steady increase in dilapidated structures is mainly due to the migration of citizens. When these persons leave, in most cases they fail to ensure that their properties are maintained.Once a notice has been dispatched,Chicago White Sox Jerseys, residents are expected to commence demolition within a matter of days, with the clearing of rubble being completed within no more than 30 days. And should the notice not be heeded, the municipality will have no choice but to complete the demolition exercise, Lewis revealed. |
