The National Accreditation Council (NAC) is currently hosting a three-day peer review workshop with support from the Caricom Secretariat. The occasion was convened at the Pegasus Hotel, Kingston, on Monday last.The workshop which focuses on the training of local assessors to competently evaluate higher level education programmes is the third of its kind to be held here. The participants of the workshop include representatives from CPCE, UG, technical institutes and other top managers of the ministry.The initiative is part of a regional programme to the build capacity of accreditation bodies of member states to ensure standards of higher education delivery are of international repute. Similar training will be undertaken in other Caricom territories.The three-day workshop funded by the European Union is being facilitated by Dr Ruby Alleyne and Jason Stafford,NFL Jerseys Outlet, both from the University of Trinidad and Tobago.Education Minister Shaik Baksh in his remarks to the gathering emphasised that quality assurance is at the forefront in the ministry’s drive to continuously improve standard and performance in the education sector.Baksh said the ministry has adopted a culture of evaluation, pointing out that the current Education Strategic Plan is being reviewed twice every year, and as part of the teacher education reform project funded by the World Bank, the Associate Degree programme offered by the Cyril Potter College of Education (CPCE) will be assessed on a regular basis to ensure compliance with reputable standards.Baksh noted that there have been concerns with the quality of the programmes offered by the University of Guyana (UG), but lauded steps taken by the university to address these matters.He disclosed that a quality assurance component for the university is in the making, and reported that work will commence on this project shortly.The minister stated that the issue of quality assurance must not only be looked at in a holistic way, but should be a standard feature of all institutions of higher learning.On that score, he praised the NAC, pointing out that the body has been proactive over the past three years. Baksh said more staff will be appointed to strengthen the capacity of the council to carry out its functions and to widen focus on the promulgation of the National Accreditation Act.He said the ministry is moving in this direction to ensure it gets value for money for the billions of dollars being invested in the education sector to improve educational outcomes. |
