| A single gunshot rang out just after 10:00hrs yesterday in Marudi Street, Lamaha Gardens. Police subsequently found 36-year-old Nerbert Gerald Orlando Harris dead in his two-storey home.Reports suggest that the businessman shot himself shortly after he entered his home.The body of Orlando Harris lying in a bedroom with the gun next to it.Had it not been for an alert female off duty police rank, Harris’s body might have been left in his home, possibly for days.The policewoman, Alana Thomson, told this newspaper that she was approaching the house next door to Harris’s home when she noticed him pulling into his driveway just about the same time.Thompson recalled that just as she got settled in at the house next door, she heard something that sounded like a gunshot and someone moaning.The other persons who were at the house heard the noise but did not recognise it for what it was.Thompson said she immediately called the police and told them of her suspicion. No one was seen entering the premises with Harris either when he arrived.This newspaper was told that Harris had a history of mental problems but still managed to lead a successful business life.He operated a real estate business and a cable service provider business, among other businesses. He was also said to be a drug dealer and his neighbours were not happy at the people who kept visiting him.A neighbour said that Harris was also no stranger to the law. He was arrested and charged when a woman accused him of assaulting her. She subsequently declined to prosecute him. He was also arrested for possession of firearm.Meanwhile, persons in the area described Harris as a troubled person. They also feared him. The weapon which was found in Harris’s home was unlicensed.The police in a release yesterday said they have commenced investigations into the circumstances surrounding Harris’s death. But before they left the premises they were convinced that death was due to suicide.The body is at the Lyken Funeral Home. |
