A jaguar captured at Lake Capoey, Essequibo has been safely relocated to Georgetown Animal Sanctuary, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) said yesterday. It was the third one in recent times. Residents of Essequibo Coast have set traps after complaining of their animals being attacked. With regards to the latest capture, EPA said that on March 24, 2016, a male Jaguar was caught in a trap set by residents of Lake Capoey, Essequibo. On receipt of this news, an officer from the EPA and a representative of the Ministry of Natural Resources visited the community to verify the news and to ensure the safety of the jaguar.“The EPA then made arrangements with the Transport and Harbours Department (T&HD) and Guyana Livestock Development Authority (GLDA) to facilitate the safe transport and relocation of the jaguar to Georgetown.”On April 5, officers of the EPA accompanied by a veterinarian travelled to the Lake Capoey Community,Cheap Adidas NHL Jerseys, secured the jaguar and transported it to the capital city.“The jaguar was relocated to Hyde Park Animal Sanctuary at Land of Canaan on the East Bank Demerara, Region Four. Jaguars are an endangered species and environmentally important. The jaguar is the largest cat of the Americas weighing up to 100kg (220 pounds) and it plays an important role in maintaining a healthy environment by helping to control the population of smaller animals lower down the food chain.”EPA noted that the number of jaguars entering Region Two communities and attacking livestock has been increasing. The primary reason is to search for food. The region also has been experiencing long dry spells which may have forced regular prey to move closer to water sources.“As the search for food becomes more difficult, Jaguars may enter communities and stumble upon “easy” food in the form of domesticated animals that are available there.”However, EPA advised that there are preventative measures, which can be taken to deter jaguars from entering into communities altogether. The most effective methods include keeping domesticated animals in well-constructed pens or corrals at night and using motion-triggered light or loud sounds near the livestock. The surprise effect causes the cat to retreat and search for food elsewhere.Jaguars are legally protected in Guyana under the Wildlife Management and Conservation Regulations (WMCR) 2013.
