The Ministry of Tourism and the Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA) yesterday hosted a ‘breakfast welcome’ at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri, for what it said was the first organized tour package to Guyana.According to the GTA, 185 visitors, mostly overseas-based Guyanese from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and as far as Kuwait in the Middle East, will engage in a week of activities. These would include visits to Kaieteur Falls and Arrow Point Nature Resort. In addition, the tourists will be treated to a night of performances featuring Dave Martins and The Tradewinds, Bing Serrao and The Ramblers, and Roy Geddes Steel Band at the Splashmins Resort on Saturday – a initiative by Stephenson’s Eco Tours in collaboration with Splashmin’s, Roraima Group of Companies, Princess Hotel, Pegasus Hotel and others.GTA Director,. Indranauth Haralsingh, said that the Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, Manniram Prashad, has been talking about the need for packaged tours and the Guyana Jamboree is an example of how this marketing tool can work well for the sector. He said that Minister Prashad endorses and encourages other operators in the tourism industry to follow this kind of initiative since it will bring about tremendous benefits such as increased hotel occupancy, fill more resorts and increase business for restaurants.Commending the organisers for the gesture, Haralsingh said that they are pioneers in this regard being the first of its kind, and encouraged them to develop this into an annual event which the Ministry of Tourism and GTA will add to its calendar of activities. He noted that Guyana Jamboree is part of their calendar of events for Tourism Awareness Month 2010 which is being staged under the theme “Community-Based Tourism: Preserving the Unique Character and Culture of Communities.”The GTA Director said it is a unique tour affording visitors flexibility since some of them can opt for some of the activities and will be staying with their families instead of, at hotels.Haralsingh said that many of the visitors have not been back to Guyana for as many as 30 to 40 years,Wholesale China Jerseys, and it is a good opportunity for ‘Guyana – the Amazon Adventure’ since “word of mouth” is an effective way to promote our destination and its natural splendor and beauty with potential for eco-, nature and adventure tourism.“They are here to go to our eco-tourism sites and the word would get out about how popular an eco-tourism destination Guyana is,” Haralsingh said.Haralsingh said that one packaged tour per month can bring a lot of benefits to operators in the private sector, and to this end, encouraged them to pursue this kind of idea by working collaboratively.Among those arriving were ‘The Ramblers’ which was a very popular band in Guyana during the 1960s, being one of the very first string bands in those days, and today, still very popular in Toronto, Canada.Three brothers form the core of the band, and many of the persons on the packaged tours are fans of the Ramblers, which has been playing for over 50 years. The legendary musicians said that Guyana’s interior is something “that Guyana should be proud of and it will do a lot for tourism”.Coordinator of Stephenson’s Eco Tours, Colin Stephenson, said that the packaged tour include airfare, accommodation, three eco-tours and transportation. He believes that the beauty of Guyana lies in its interior and there are many resorts that are up to standards, and said that this move is an ‘eye opener’ for Guyanese who haven’t come back to their homeland in a long time since they must know what their land of birth has to offer.Colin Robinson who has been living for 30 years in Toronto said that he looks forward to the eco-tours and exploring Guyana’s natural beauty, and also took the opportunity to commend Mr. Stephenson for the initiative.Another overseas-based Guyanese, David Teixeira, who left Guyana 40 years ago and now resides in Toronto as well, said he last visited Guyana some 30 years ago and is happy to be back in Guyana. He said that this is his chance to travel around his homeland’s and discover its eco-tourism offerings. An excited Colette Ulanicki, coming back after some 40 years, said that she is mostly looking forward to visiting her home town and her relatives here.
