– Child Counsellor By Jeanna Pearson A mere two weeks into 2016, Guyana was left staggering with a series of reported cases of suicide; almost onChild Counsellor Abbigale Lonckea daily basis new reports surfaced of someone taking their own life. The upshot: the country was left watching with bated breaths as the President, David Granger, called an emergency meeting to tackle the epidemic. Will the strategies work? Only time will tell. But what has been noticed is that issues of poor parenting and relationship conflicts are scarcely being addressed while the means of the suicide is being dealt with.According to the World Health Organisation (WHO) Report “Preventing suicide: a global imperative,” in some countries,http://www.footlockershop.us.com/Aaron/, like Guyana, suicide is at its highest among the youths with most of the cases and attempts arising from vulnerable groups struggling with relationship issues, discrimination, trauma and abuse, isolation and lack of social support from families and friends. This was the case of a double-suicide that rocked the county of Berbice, a few weeks ago.The adolescent girl and her boyfriend appeared to have suffered at the hands of poor parenting and relationship conflict, Child Counsellor Abbigale Loncke told Kaieteur News in a recent interview. She stated that culture, religious beliefs, the legal system and a person’s immediate relationship with his/her family can have an impact on suicidal behaviour. She stated that poor parenting and relationship clashes can cause grief and psychological stress that inevitably increase the risk of suicide. She cited that an unhealthy relationship is also another risk factor.According to the WHO, suicidal behaviour often occurs as a response to personal psychological stress in a social context where sources of support are lacking. It added that isolation occurs when a person feels disconnected from his or her closest social circle: partners, family members and friends. While persons who share close personal and enduring relationships typically have a sense of purpose, security and connectedness.Loncke stated that parents and guardians need to start listening to their children and show them, not tell them, that they care for them. “If we approach them with a judgemental attitude we will definitely lose them to isolation or worse suicide,” she said. She said many parents and guardians are ill-equipped to cope with such situations and as such there is need for open dialogue with parents across the country. She stated that there should be a shift from the adolescents to the parents.“We need parents to work out their own emotions before we allow them to counsel teens,” she added, noting that many teens who commit suicide lacked a relationship with their parent(s).Chief Medical OfficerDr Shamdeo Persaud“We need to stop discriminating and blaming it all on ‘oh she young and hot’ and ‘we can’t stop them from killing themselves if they want to’ and examine the core issues that are fuelling this epidemic…we need to look at what is going on inside the house. What is being said…what is being encouraged…that’s where we need to start—in the home with the parents and then move to the relationship conflict,” she said fervently.SHUNNINGShe stated that Guyanese do not live in a culture where daughters and sons can openly communicate sensitive issues such as sex and affection with their parents, because such a culture never existed in the first place. And so, she said teens and young adults who are not embraced at home by their families and parents tend to develop a great amount of anger and depression which leads to suicide.Chief Medical Officer Dr. Shamdeo Persaud has indicated that many cases of suicide in adolescent and young adults in Guyana are linked to a “shunning” by their families. He stated that many times parents would not approve of a relationship and ban the couple from seeing each other.“But banning them won’t help the situation. It only makes it worst. We need to first understand what is going on. We need to listen. Parenting is not about shouting and beating your children, it is about protecting them and resolving conflict situations with them,” he said.Persaud explained that teenagers are at a stage where their bodies and minds are evolving into adulthood and so it is a very “ticklest” period where they do not even understand their own emotions. He said parents need to be sensitive to this change and help them through the phase instead of yelling at them.He added that the issue of suicide is exploding and thus needs to be treated as an emergency. “Suicide is not a health issue alone; it is a social issue and a cultural issue,” he said.DON’T TAKE THREATS OF SUICIDE LIGHTLY“No matter how frivolous it may sound, don’t take the threats of suicide lightly, because we don’t know when someone has reached a breaking point. The mere fact that they are voicing it shows that it has crossed their minds or they are actually contemplating it,” Loncke said, adding that the majority of times these persons do not really want to take their lives.“It is usually a cry for help…for someone to listen to them. So we need to take every single threat seriously,” she added.Even though she commends the government for placing counsellors in schools and developing a suicide hotline, she said Guyana still needs to think outside of the box.“What if that person doesn’t have credit in their phone? Why don’t we try to make the hotline toll-free? Why don’t we go into the communities that are vulnerable and get these people to talk? We should have drop-in centres so that persons can receive counselling for free,” she questioned. The WHO report recommended that the cultivation and maintenance of healthy close relationships can increase individual resilience and act as a protective factor against the risk of suicide. It stated that a person’s family have the most influence and can be supportive in times of crisis, citing “relationships are especially protective for adolescents and the elderly who have a higher level of dependency”.Suicide is the second leading cause of death among 15–29-year-olds. Seventy-five per cent of global suicides occur in low and middle-income countries, with suicide rates high amongst vulnerable groups, experiencing discrimination— such as refugees and migrants; indigenous peoples; lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and prisoners.Guyana was estimated as having the highest suicide rate in the world in 2012 with an overall rate of 44.2 cases per 100,000 individuals. Guyana’s ranking comes even though there was an 8.5% decline in the country’s suicide rate between 2000 and 2012, suggesting that local efforts to combat suicide have simply not kept up with that of other countries. For January there have been over 15 cases of suicide and attempted suicide. Most of the time, many incidence of suicide go unreported.Recently, a 24-hour suicide hotline was set up and counselors are available to talk with persons battling with thoughts of suicide and depression. Also, a National Suicide Prevention Plan is being implemented.“All the efforts are commendable, but we need to get to the parents and iron out the issues in the relationship before we can reach the person suffering,” Loncke reiterated, adding that every case of suicide is one too many life lost.
