Food for The Poor (FFP) Guyana Incorporated has begun their planned countrywide free distribution of wheel chairs in Berbice.The august body in collaboration with the St Francis Community Developers (SFCD) recently distributed the first set of wheelchairs.More than 30 differently able persons who have walking disabilities were presented with chairs at a simple ceremony held at the SFCD headquarters at their multipurpose hall, Portuguese Quarters, Port Mourant, Corentyne, Berbice.Heading the FFP mission was Senior Manager and head of the Gifts and Kind department of the organization, Mr. Jimeel Davis, who was accompanied by Executive Assistant, Ms. Lizanna Gordon, and ably assisted by President and founder of the SFCD and FFP Berbice representative, Alex Foster.Mr. Davis in speaking at the ceremony disclosed that the initiative is one that is being undertaken in collaboration with the Free Wheelchair Mission of the United States.The Free Wheelchair Mission (FWM) which was founded in 2001 by Laurie and Don Schoendorfer is an international faith-based non-profit humanitarian organization which is dedicated to providing wheelchairs for the impoverished disabled in developing nations.According to Davis some 550 wheelchairs were brought into the country for free distribution to those in need by his organization, which will be working in collaboration with a number of other groups.He said that Berbice is an excellent place to start since Berbice always seems to be well organized.Thanks to Mr. Foster and his SFCD organization. He noted that while FFTP has over the years catered to the wheelchair needs of persons with disabilities, its capacity did not allow it to meet all the requests made.He said also, what is different this time, is that the wheelchairs are made available upon request and their size.He noted that these sets of wheelchairs are second generation wheelchairs that are more made to suit the specific needs of the benefactors.He also mentioned that soon the WFM will be making third generation chairs which the FFP will be hoping to cash in on.According to Davis, affording persons wheelchairs in various sizes has on occasions been a challenge.He said that before while the FFTP programme had focused mainly on acquiring wheelchairs for the disabled, affording them the ideal sizes has not always been possible.He said now the wheelchairs will be available in small, medium and large sizes.“We have the different sizes and the parts that we can fit together ourselves.”Persons desirous of acquiring a wheelchair are asked to make contact with the office in Georgetown or the SFCD or other relevant personnel.What is desirous is a photograph of a person in need showing their disability and a letter of application and recommendation from a prominent person in the area.Davis stated, “I am appealing to people who know anyone, a neighbour, relative, a friend, who is in need of a wheelchair to come in and apply for one, and we will definitely assist.”Foster also spoke on the initiative and encouraged the recipients to care the wheelchairs.Representatives of the Disabled People Network,Alex English Jersey, the special needs schools in Berbice, the Ministry of education were all present and spoke brief words of appreciation. |
